OVERVIEW
Fenghuang is a compact old town in western Hunan, built along a river beneath low forested hills. Timber houses stand on stilts above the water, while stone lanes, towers and bridges form a dense historic core. Miao and Tujia cultures influence local dress, food and craft traditions.
The stilted riverfront is highly commercial and busiest after dark, when illuminated wooden houses create a theatrical atmosphere. Quieter lanes, hillside temples and nearby villages provide more local context. Early mornings offer the clearest view of the town before tour groups arrive, while a slower stay reveals the traditions of the surrounding minority communities.
