OVERVIEW
Faial is a compact Azorean island dominated by a central volcanic crater and a rugged western eruption landscape. Horta, the main town, has long served as a stop for transatlantic sailors, and its marina walls are covered with painted messages from passing crews. Pasture, villages and hydrangea hedges cover much of the interior.
Horta’s marina and painted harbour walls reflect the island’s role in transatlantic sailing, while the central caldera offers a completely different green landscape. At Capelinhos, dark ash and a buried lighthouse record the 1957 eruption. Whale watching and hiking are weather dependent, but the island’s compact size makes flexible plans practical.
