Donegal is a broad county in north western Ireland, shaped by rugged coast, mountain ranges, peatland and scattered rural settlements. Small towns and fishing harbours provide services, while much of the landscape remains open and lightly populated. Gaelic language and music traditions are especially strong in western districts, and the coastline includes some of Europe’s highest sea cliffs.

Driving links the region’s beaches, headlands and inland valleys, though narrow roads make distances slower than expected. Walking, surfing and traditional music provide different ways to engage with the area. Weather changes quickly, but dramatic light and low visitor density give the region a character distinct from the better known routes farther south.
