OVERVIEW

Doha curves around a broad bay, with glass towers, government districts and major cultural institutions spread along the waterfront. A restored market and older harbour area provide a more traditional urban core, while planned neighbourhoods and artificial islands extend beyond it. The city is low density and car dependent outside the centre, with intense heat shaping public life for much of the year.

Museums, contemporary architecture and the evening corniche provide the strongest reasons to explore. Heat pushes much activity indoors or into the night for much of the year. Distances are considerable, and the city’s scale is easier to manage by transport than on foot. Traditional dhow boats and market streets provide a useful contrast with the modern skyline.
