OVERVIEW
Djerba is a flat Mediterranean island of olive groves, date palms and scattered settlements. White domed houses and small mosques are spread across the interior, while beach resorts line parts of the eastern coast. The island also contains one of North Africa’s oldest Jewish communities and an important synagogue.
Markets, pottery villages and rural roads reveal more of the island than the resort strip alone. Beaches are broad and convenient, though development is substantial in some areas. A car or driver helps connect widely dispersed settlements, workshops and religious sites. Evening markets and seafood restaurants add a sociable rhythm beyond the beach areas.
