OVERVIEW
Dinant stands on the River Meuse beneath steep limestone cliffs. A large church with a distinctive dome sits beside the water, while a hilltop citadel rises directly behind the town. Houses, cafés and roads occupy a narrow strip between river and rock. A railway and main road also pass through the narrow valley, reinforcing the compressed urban form.
River cruises and the hilltop citadel provide the clearest views of the town compressed between water and cliffs. Public art recalls the local inventor of the saxophone, while cafés line the narrow riverfront. Steep steps and a cable car connect the different levels, and nearby kayaking routes extend the experience beyond the compact centre.

THINGS TO DO
Paddle Dinant’s main waters
Paddle around Dinant’s main paddling waters on a route suited to local water and weather conditions. Hire equipment or a guide where currents, access points or changing forecasts make independent planning difficult.
Cruise Dinant’s main waterways
Choose a boat trip that gives a clear view of Dinant’s main waterways and the surrounding landscape. Routes and operating periods vary, so confirm the departure point and current schedule.
Hike around Grotte la Merveilleuse
Choose a walk around Grotte la Merveilleuse that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Admire Collégiale Notre Dame de Dinant
Look closely at Collégiale Notre Dame de Dinant for a concrete introduction to Dinant’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Citadel of Dinant
Use Citadel of Dinant to understand a specific part of Dinant’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
