OVERVIEW
The Dead Sea lies in a deep tectonic basin between Jordan and Israel, more than 400 metres below sea level. Its exceptionally saline water allows effortless floating but supports little aquatic life. Mineral shores, desert mountains and retreating waterlines define the surrounding landscape. Resorts and public access points are scattered along separate sections of the shoreline.
Swimming is unlike a conventional beach experience: cuts sting, water should not enter the eyes and time in the lake is usually brief. Resorts provide access, while nearby archaeological and desert sites add wider context. Rapid shrinkage and sinkholes are major environmental concerns shaping the region.

THINGS TO DO
Explore Dead Sea’s archaeological sites
Explore Dead Sea’s archaeological sites to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Dead Sea. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Trace Dead Sea’s historic sites
Use Dead Sea’s historic sites to understand a specific part of Dead Sea’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Plan restorative time at Dead Sea’s principal wellness area, checking whether advance booking, swimwear or local bathing customs apply. Thermal and outdoor facilities can also have seasonal restrictions.
