OVERVIEW
Con Dao is a small archipelago off the southern coast of Vietnam, with one main inhabited island surrounded by forested slopes and clear water. Beaches, coral reefs and turtle nesting sites provide strong natural appeal, while former prison buildings and memorials preserve the islands’ role in political repression and national history.
Days can move between quiet beaches, forest walks and sombre historical sites. Diving and snorkelling reveal healthy marine life, while seasonal turtle programmes require controlled access. The main settlement remains small and low-rise, and the relative isolation gives the islands a calmer atmosphere than larger coastal resorts.

THINGS TO DO
Look for wildlife around Turtle Sanctuary
Look for wildlife around Turtle Sanctuary with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Snorkel around Con Dao’s principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
Dive around Dive! Dive! Dive! with an operator suited to your certification and experience. Visibility, currents and access change with conditions, and particular sightings are never guaranteed.
Spend time at Con Dao’s coastline rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Trace Con Dao’s historic sites
Use Con Dao’s historic sites to understand a specific part of Con Dao’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
