OVERVIEW
Colonia del Sacramento stands on a low peninsula beside the Río de la Plata. Its historic quarter contains stone streets, tiled roofs, ruined fortifications and small houses from Portuguese and Spanish periods. A lighthouse, old gate and waterfront paths sit within a compact area, while the modern town extends inland with cafés, parks and residential streets.
The old quarter is best explored slowly, especially early or late in the day when ferry groups are fewer. River sunsets, shaded courtyards and simple museums add atmosphere without requiring a long checklist. The town is polished for tourism, but its low scale and visible layers of occupation remain convincing.
