OVERVIEW
Chiloé Island lies off the coast of southern Chile, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. Green farmland, forest and tidal inlets surround small towns known for colourful houses raised above the water. Distinctive wooden churches, built through local carpentry traditions, are spread across the island and nearby smaller islands.
Weather changes quickly, and rain is a regular part of the landscape rather than an occasional interruption. Seafood stews, myths and boatbuilding traditions reflect long dependence on the sea. Roads connect the main towns, but ferries and rural lanes reveal quieter communities where the island’s cultural identity remains strongest.
