OVERVIEW
Chapada Diamantina is a broad plateau region of sandstone cliffs, caves, rivers and high grassland in inland Bahia. Former diamond-mining towns now serve as bases for trails leading to waterfalls, natural pools and expansive viewpoints. The landscape is spread across several valleys, with no single site representing the whole region.
Walking ranges from short waterfall routes to multi-day journeys through remote valleys. Water levels and clarity change with rainfall, affecting swimming and cave visits. Historic towns add architecture and local culture between hikes, while long road distances make choosing one area or guided circuit more practical than attempting to cover the entire plateau.
