OVERVIEW
Cardiff developed from a small fortified settlement into a major coal-exporting port and national capital. The centre contains a Roman and medieval castle, Victorian shopping arcades and formal civic buildings, while former docks have been transformed into a waterfront district of cultural venues and restaurants. Residential neighbourhoods extend along river corridors and parks.
Sport, music and national institutions give the compact centre an active public life. The arcades support independent shops and cafés, while the waterfront offers open space and modern architecture beyond the historic core. A large stadium sits directly beside the main streets, making major events unusually visible throughout the city.
