OVERVIEW
Cambridge grew around a university whose colleges, chapels and courtyards dominate the historic centre. Medieval lanes open onto formal lawns and riverside gardens, while bicycles, students and market stalls keep the streets active beyond their architectural importance. The River Cam winds behind several colleges and through open meadows close to the centre.
College access varies, but walking routes and punting trips still reveal much of the city’s historic structure. Museums and bookshops add substance beyond the most photographed buildings, while neighbourhood cafés provide a less formal side of university life. The centre becomes crowded in peak periods, though quieter paths begin quickly along the river.
