OVERVIEW
Camagüey has one of the country’s most distinctive colonial street plans, with narrow lanes turning unexpectedly between small squares, churches and pastel houses. The irregular layout developed over centuries and differs sharply from the ordered grids common in other regional cities. Large earthenware jars once used to store water remain a familiar local symbol.
The centre rewards slow exploration because important buildings and plazas often appear without warning around a corner. Art studios, theatres and local restaurants occupy restored houses, while residential life remains visible beyond the principal squares. The city is less dominated by tourism than several better-known colonial centres, giving everyday streets greater prominence.
