OVERVIEW
Bucovina is a historic countryside region in northern Romania, known for Orthodox monasteries whose exterior walls are covered in vivid sixteenth-century frescoes. Villages, hayfields and wooded hills connect the religious sites, while traditional houses and craft workshops preserve a strong regional identity. The town of Suceava provides the main transport and service base.
The monasteries are individually distinctive, with different colours, compositions and fortified settings. Driving between them also reveals rural life, horse-drawn carts, small farms and changing mountain scenery. Distances are manageable, but public transport is limited and the value of the region comes as much from the journeys between sites as from the monuments themselves.
