The British Virgin Islands are a compact archipelago of steep volcanic islands, reefs and protected channels. Tortola holds the main town and most services, while Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and smaller islands offer beaches, marinas and simple coastal settlements. Short sea distances make the group especially well suited to sailing.

Island-hopping shapes most visits, with calm anchorages, snorkelling sites and beach bars reached by boat. Each major island has a distinct emphasis, from granite boulders and quiet bays to livelier harbours. Resort development remains relatively low-rise, though prices are high and many experiences depend on access to a yacht or water taxi.
