OVERVIEW
Brazzaville lies on the north bank of the Congo River, directly opposite Kinshasa. Government buildings, colonial-era avenues and modernist churches occupy the central districts, while markets and residential neighbourhoods spread inland. The wide river and rocky rapids shape both the city’s geography and its long role as a transport centre.
Waterfront viewpoints reveal the unusual sight of another national capital across the river. Music, fashion and local restaurants are important parts of social life, while markets offer a stronger sense of everyday commerce. The centre is relatively low-rise, but journeys between districts can be slow because of traffic and limited infrastructure.

THINGS TO DO
Taste local food around Street food
Use Street food as a starting point for tasting food connected to Brazzaville, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Admire Sacred Heart Cathedral
Look closely at Sacred Heart Cathedral for a concrete introduction to Brazzaville’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza
Use Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza to understand a specific part of Brazzaville’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
