OVERVIEW
Bodrum occupies a sheltered bay on Turkey’s south-west coast, with white houses climbing low hills around a marina and medieval castle. The town stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, once home to one of the classical world’s great tombs. Beaches, restaurants and nightlife now spread along the waterfront and nearby coves.
The castle and underwater archaeology museum provide a strong historical centre, while boat trips reveal quieter bays along the peninsula. Summer evenings are lively, especially around the marina and bar streets. Development is extensive, but traditional markets and nearby villages preserve a more local side beyond the central resort area.

THINGS TO DO
Spend time at The Windy Bay rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Admire Bodrum’s medieval streets
Look closely at Bodrum’s medieval streets for a concrete introduction to Bodrum’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Spend an evening in Bodrum
Spend an evening around Bodrum’s main evening district, choosing venues that fit the local scene rather than assuming every district offers the same atmosphere. Opening nights and late transport can vary.
Discover living traditions in Bodrum
Use Bodrum’s living traditions to learn about living traditions connected to Bodrum, choosing respectful, locally led encounters. Avoid treating contemporary communities or religious practice as a performance.
Cruise Bodrum’s main waterways
Choose a boat trip that gives a clear view of Bodrum’s main waterways and the surrounding landscape. Routes and operating periods vary, so confirm the departure point and current schedule.
Focus on Maritime Museum for a collection that adds real context to Bodrum. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Explore Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Explore Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Bodrum. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Trace local history at Bodrum Castle /
Use Bodrum Castle / to understand a specific part of Bodrum’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
