OVERVIEW
Boa Vista is a low, arid island in the Atlantic, known for broad sand dunes, salt flats and long undeveloped beaches. The main town, Sal Rei, contains colourful colonial buildings, a small harbour and most visitor services. Beyond it, roads and tracks cross a sparse interior towards fishing villages and remote stretches of coast.
Wind and open water support kitesurfing and sailing, while sea turtles nest on several beaches during the warmer months. Resort areas provide easy beach access, but the island’s stronger character appears in its empty landscapes and small settlements. Conditions away from the main roads can be rough, so guided trips are common.
