OVERVIEW
The Blue Mountains rise west of Sydney as a broad sandstone plateau cut by deep gorges and forested valleys. Towns line the main ridge, providing access to viewpoints, waterfalls and walking tracks. Eucalyptus oils scatter blue light across the landscape, giving distant ridges the haze that inspired the region’s name.
Short lookouts reveal the scale of the sandstone cliffs, but longer walks descend into rainforest gullies and reach waterfalls below the plateau. Eucalyptus haze gives distant ridges their blue appearance. Weather changes quickly and cloud can obscure major views, so flexible timing and more than one viewpoint are useful even on a brief stay.

THINGS TO DO
See Blue Mountains’ principal viewpoints
Set aside time at Blue Mountains’ principal viewpoints specifically for the natural panorama, not merely as a stop between activities. Visibility and access can change with weather and season.
Cycle Blue Mountains’ principal route
Choose a cycling route around Blue Mountains’ principal cycling route that matches your fitness and the available time. Check gradients, surfaces and traffic rather than judging the ride by distance alone.
Cycling
2 hours to full day
Look for wildlife areas in Blue Mountains
Look for wildlife around Blue Mountains’ wildlife areas with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed.
Use Blue Mountains’ main climbing area as the focus for a climbing day suited to your ability. Local access, equipment and weather matter, so go with a qualified guide when conditions or routes are unfamiliar.
Hike around Megalong Australian Heritage Farm
Choose a walk around Megalong Australian Heritage Farm that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
