OVERVIEW
Bitola developed as an important Ottoman trading and administrative centre near the Greek border. Its main pedestrian street is lined with nineteenth-century buildings from the period when foreign consulates shaped local life, while mosques, churches and an old bazaar reveal earlier layers. The remains of the ancient city of Heraclea lie just outside the modern centre.
Cafés fill the central promenade, making evening social life as important as formal sightseeing. The bazaar is quieter and more worn than the grand avenue, but it preserves a stronger sense of older commercial patterns. Nearby mountains and villages add hiking and rural scenery, though the city itself is compact enough for a focused cultural stay.
