OVERVIEW
Big Sur is a sparsely settled stretch of central California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise directly from the Pacific Ocean. Highway 1 follows cliffs, bridges and headlands above narrow beaches, while redwood groves fill shaded valleys inland. There is no single town centre; lodges, parks and roadside businesses are spread along the coast.
Most visits combine scenic driving with short hikes, beach stops and viewpoints. Fog can hide the coastline, landslides occasionally affect access and mobile coverage is limited, so flexible plans are useful. The strongest experience comes from the scale of the landscape and the sudden shifts between open ocean, steep grassland and enclosed forest.

THINGS TO DO
Take in the view from Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
Set aside time at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park specifically for the natural panorama, not merely as a stop between activities. Visibility and access can change with weather and season. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Spend time at Pfeiffer Beach rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Look for wildlife around Garrapata State Park
Look for wildlife around Garrapata State Park with attention to habitat and responsible viewing distances. Seasons affect animal movement, and wild sightings should never be guaranteed. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Hike around Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
Choose a walk around Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.

Drive Big Sur’s coastal roads
Build a manageable drive through Big Sur’s coastal roads, allowing for stops and slower roads. In a destination as spread out as Big Sur, choose a route that works from your base.
