OVERVIEW
Big Sur is a sparsely settled stretch of central California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise directly from the Pacific Ocean. Highway 1 follows cliffs, bridges and headlands above narrow beaches, while redwood groves fill shaded valleys inland. There is no single town centre; lodges, parks and roadside businesses are spread along the coast.
Most visits combine scenic driving with short hikes, beach stops and viewpoints. Fog can hide the coastline, landslides occasionally affect access and mobile coverage is limited, so flexible plans are useful. The strongest experience comes from the scale of the landscape and the sudden shifts between open ocean, steep grassland and enclosed forest.
