OVERVIEW
Białowieża Forest straddles the border between Poland and Belarus and protects a rare surviving fragment of the woodland that once covered much of lowland Europe. Old oaks, wetlands and fallen trees support exceptional biodiversity, including the continent’s largest population of European bison. The village of Białowieża serves as the main base on the Polish side.
Some areas can be explored independently by bicycle or on marked paths, while the most strictly protected core requires a licensed guide. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but early excursions may reveal bison, deer and numerous woodland birds. The forest’s importance lies as much in its natural processes and old-growth structure as in any single animal encounter.
