OVERVIEW
Bergamo is divided between a fortified upper town and a larger lower city on the edge of the Lombardy plain. The old centre sits behind sixteenth-century walls, with steep lanes, medieval squares and richly decorated churches. Below, the modern city contains shops, cafés and transport links, while a short funicular connects the two levels.
Much of the experience comes from moving between the compact hilltop centre and the more everyday city below. Evening walks along the walls open wide views across the plain, and local restaurants focus on substantial regional cooking. The old town can be busy by day, but quieter streets quickly appear away from the main square.
