OVERVIEW
Belfast lies at the head of a long inlet on the north-east coast of Ireland, surrounded by low hills. Its centre contains grand civic buildings, markets and former industrial streets, while the docks preserve the city’s major shipbuilding heritage. Murals and divided neighbourhoods also reflect the political conflict that shaped much of the twentieth century.
New museums, restaurants and music venues have brought activity to former industrial areas and the central streets. Political history remains visible and is best approached with context rather than as decoration. The city is compact enough to explore easily, while nearby coast and countryside add a strong landscape dimension beyond the urban visit.
