OVERVIEW
Bayahibe is a coastal town on the south-east of the Dominican Republic, built around a sheltered harbour and sandy beaches. Once primarily a fishing village, it now serves as a main departure point for boats to nearby islands and protected reefs. Small hotels and restaurants remain within the original settlement, while larger resorts occupy beaches farther along the coast.
Boat excursions and diving dominate the visitor economy, with clear water and accessible reefs providing the strongest attractions. The central harbour becomes busy in the morning as tours depart, then quietens later in the day. Compared with the country’s largest resort zones, the town retains a more compact and local scale despite substantial tourism.
