OVERVIEW
Barbuda is a low coral island with long pale beaches, lagoons and a single principal settlement. Much of the coast remains undeveloped, while the Codrington Lagoon supports one of the Caribbean’s largest frigatebird colonies. Hurricane damage and rebuilding continue to shape housing, infrastructure and debates over the island’s future.
Beach and boat travel dominate, with few formal attractions or built-up resort areas. Hurricane damage has repeatedly affected homes and infrastructure, and reconstruction has changed parts of the island. Services can be limited, but the combination of wildlife, open coastline and low population creates a sense of space that is increasingly rare in the Caribbean.
