Bandung lies on a high plateau in western Java, surrounded by volcanic mountains and tea-growing countryside. Its centre contains notable Dutch colonial and Art Deco architecture, while universities, shopping districts and dense residential areas make it one of Indonesia’s largest urban centres. The elevation gives it a milder climate than the coastal plains around Jakarta.

Factory outlets, cafés and street food draw large domestic crowds, especially at weekends. Volcanic craters, hot springs and tea estates lie outside the built-up area, but heavy traffic can make short excursions slow. The city’s youthful population and design culture provide energy beyond its colonial buildings, though rapid growth has placed pressure on roads and public space.
