OVERVIEW
Atlantic City occupies a barrier island on the coast of New Jersey, with a long wooden boardwalk separating hotels, casinos and shops from the beach. Developed as a nineteenth-century seaside resort, it later became one of the main gambling centres in the eastern United States. Large casino complexes dominate the central waterfront, while residential neighbourhoods extend beyond the tourist strip.
The beach remains publicly accessible and gives the city a different character during daylight hours, especially in summer. At night, casinos, restaurants and entertainment venues become the focus. Economic decline is visible in empty lots and ageing buildings between major developments, creating a more uneven urban experience than the polished interiors of the resorts suggest.

THINGS TO DO
Taste regional food scene in Atlantic City
Use Atlantic City’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Atlantic City, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Admire novelty architecture
Look closely at novelty architecture for a concrete introduction to Atlantic City’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Find Atlantic City’s best-known beaches
Spend time at Atlantic City’s best-known beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Trace local history at New Jersey Korean War Memorial
Use New Jersey Korean War Memorial to understand a specific part of Atlantic City’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
See a show at Atlantic City Shows
Plan an evening at Atlantic City Shows for a performance or show connected to the local scene. Programmes and opening nights change, so check what is actually running during your stay.
