OVERVIEW
Asunción stretches along the Paraguay River, with a small historic centre surrounded by a much larger low-rise metropolitan area. Government buildings, churches and older houses stand near the waterfront, while commercial districts and residential neighbourhoods extend inland. The city’s architecture is varied rather than monumental, and much of its character comes from everyday street life, gardens and informal social spaces.
The centre can be quiet outside working hours, while restaurants, bars and shopping areas are distributed across newer neighbourhoods. Hot weather shapes the daily rhythm, with shaded courtyards and evening activity especially important. Museums and markets provide an introduction to Paraguayan history and crafts, but the city is best appreciated through its relaxed pace and local routines.
