OVERVIEW
Astrakhan stands in the broad delta of the Volga River, where numerous channels spread towards the Caspian Sea. Its historic centre contains a white-walled fortress, churches and merchant houses reflecting centuries of trade between Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. Fishing and river transport remain important, and the flat surrounding landscape is shaped by wetlands, reeds and seasonal water.
Markets and local cuisine reveal a mix of Russian, Tatar and other regional influences, especially through fish, spices and produce from the delta. Boat journeys offer a very different view from the streets, passing low islands and working river settlements. Summer heat can be intense, while spring and early autumn better reveal the city’s connection with the waterways around it.
