OVERVIEW
Assisi rises along the slope of a hill in central Italy, overlooking olive groves and a broad agricultural plain. Its medieval centre is closely associated with Saint Francis, whose basilica contains important frescoes and draws pilgrims from around the world. Stone houses, small squares and steep lanes extend above and below the main religious sites, creating a remarkably unified historic setting.
Religious life is visible throughout the town, but the experience is not limited to formal worship. Quiet churches, walking paths and views across the Umbrian countryside provide space away from the busiest pilgrimage routes. Day visitors can crowd the main streets, especially around the basilica, while early mornings and evenings reveal a calmer residential side.

THINGS TO DO
Admire San Rufino Cathedral
Look closely at San Rufino Cathedral for a concrete introduction to Assisi’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace Assisi’s medieval history
Use Assisi’s medieval history to understand a specific part of Assisi’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Visit Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi
Visit Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi with attention to its continuing religious meaning as well as its architecture or history. Dress and behave respectfully, and expect access to change during services.
