Aspen is a small Colorado town set in a narrow mountain valley, surrounded by ski slopes, forests and high peaks. Formerly a silver-mining settlement, it now combines preserved nineteenth-century buildings with luxury hotels, restaurants and galleries. Four separate ski areas operate nearby, giving the destination a broader range of terrain than its compact centre might suggest.
Winter brings skiing and a busy social scene, while summer shifts attention to hiking, cycling, music and outdoor events. The town is expensive and highly developed, but the mountain setting remains immediate, with trails and lifts close to the streets. Cultural programmes and historic architecture give it more depth than a purpose-built resort, even when peak-season activity is intense.
