OVERVIEW
Asheville lies in a broad valley within the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Its centre combines early twentieth-century buildings, small galleries, music venues and an unusually dense collection of independent restaurants and breweries. Forested ridges surround the urban area, and the grand Biltmore estate on the city’s edge reflects a very different period of local history.
Outdoor access is a major part of the experience, with scenic roads, waterfalls and hiking routes close to the city. Live music, craft studios and neighbourhood cafés create activity after daylight hours without the scale of a large metropolis. The combination of mountain landscape and established cultural life makes it possible to alternate easily between urban and outdoor days.

THINGS TO DO
Trace local history at Grove Arcade
Use Grove Arcade to understand a specific part of Asheville’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Choose a walk around Urban Trail that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Taste local food around The Market Place
Use The Market Place as a starting point for tasting food connected to Asheville, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
