Aran Islands

The Aran Islands are three inhabited limestone islands off Ireland’s west coast. Small fields divided by long dry-stone walls cover much of the interior, while prehistoric forts, churches, fishing harbours and high sea cliffs provide the main landmarks. Irish remains widely spoken, especially on the smaller islands, and farming, fishing and craft traditions continue alongside tourism.

Ferries and narrow island roads set a slower scale of movement, with cycling and walking revealing details easily missed from a vehicle. Weather and sea conditions influence both access and atmosphere, making the islands feel closely tied to the Atlantic. The largest island has the broadest services, while the smaller two offer a more intimate view of language, farming and community life.
