OVERVIEW
Antigua Guatemala occupies a highland valley surrounded by volcanoes, with cobbled streets and low colonial buildings arranged around a central square. Repeated earthquakes damaged many churches and convents, leaving monumental façades and open ruins alongside restored houses, courtyards and active religious institutions. The low skyline preserves mountain views and makes the historic centre feel visually consistent.
The city is not only a collection of ruins. Language schools, cafés, craft workshops and local markets give the centre a strong everyday life, while coffee farms and villages connect it to the wider valley. Volcanoes remain visible from many streets when weather is clear. The compact plan rewards slow exploration, although popularity can make the central area busy at weekends and during major festivals.
