OVERVIEW
Annecy stands at the northern end of a clear mountain lake in south-eastern France. Canals and a small river pass through a historic centre of pastel buildings, arcades and narrow streets, while gardens and promenades open directly onto the water. A medieval island building and a former castle provide the main landmarks, but the lake and surrounding peaks define the town more strongly than any single monument.
The old centre combines naturally with swimming areas, cycling paths and boat routes around the lake. Markets, restaurants and waterfront activity keep the town lively through much of the year. Central streets become crowded in peak periods, while quieter sections of the shore and early-morning walks show why the town works equally well for urban wandering and outdoor activity.

THINGS TO DO
Admire Saint Peter's Cathedral
Look closely at Saint Peter's Cathedral for a concrete introduction to Annecy’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Cycle Annecy’s principal route
Choose a cycling route around Annecy’s principal cycling route that matches your fitness and the available time. Check gradients, surfaces and traffic rather than judging the ride by distance alone.

Trace local history at Annecy Castle
Use Annecy Castle to understand a specific part of Annecy’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
