OVERVIEW
Annapolis is the capital of Maryland, set where a river meets Chesapeake Bay on the eastern side of the United States. The compact historic centre contains eighteenth-century houses, the domed state capitol and narrow streets descending towards a busy harbour. The United States Naval Academy occupies a large waterfront campus, while sailing, boatbuilding and seafood remain central to local life.
History and harbour activity sit unusually close together. Government buildings, pubs, marinas and residential lanes can all be reached on foot from the centre, and boats remain a constant presence. Summer weekends and major events bring crowds, while streets beyond the main dock reveal a quieter residential side and a stronger sense of an inhabited coastal town.
