Anna Maria Island is a narrow barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast, west of the city of Bradenton. White-sand beaches run along its western shore, while bays, piers and mangrove areas shape the quieter eastern side. Buildings remain low compared with many resort coasts, and cottages, small inns and local businesses give the three island communities a more residential appearance.

The island is straightforward to enjoy, with beaches, cafés and piers close together and a free trolley linking the main settlements. Cycling is practical in many areas, although roads become congested during busy periods. There is no single major attraction; the value lies in the absence of high-rise development, easy access to the water and a slower, smaller-scale alternative to Florida’s larger beach resorts.
