OVERVIEW
The Andaman Islands form a long tropical archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, politically part of India but geographically closer to South-East Asia. Dense rainforest, mangroves, coral reefs and pale beaches cover many islands, while the main town provides the principal airport, port and historical sites. Former colonial prisons record a difficult history, and several Indigenous communities remain protected from outside contact.
Most trips remain within a limited group of accessible islands connected by ferries. Diving, snorkelling, beach time and forest walks are the main activities, and weather or transport schedules often require flexibility. Some areas are closed or heavily restricted to protect Indigenous communities and ecosystems. The archipelago needs to be approached as a sensitive island environment, not an unrestricted tropical playground.
