OVERVIEW
Amritsar is the spiritual centre of Sikhism and the largest city in India’s Punjab region. Its defining site is the Golden Temple, a gilded sanctuary set within a sacred pool and surrounded by a large complex that welcomes pilgrims throughout the day and night. Nearby, a memorial garden records a major colonial-era massacre, while markets and food streets fill the dense old city.
The Golden Temple is not simply a monument: worship, music, bathing and the vast free community kitchen make it an active religious institution. Visitors are expected to follow clear rules of respect, and spending time observing the daily routines adds more understanding than a quick photograph. The city also offers rich Punjabi food and a dramatic border ceremony outside town, giving the visit both spiritual and political context.
