OVERVIEW
AlUla is an oasis region in north western Saudi Arabia, where sandstone cliffs, date groves and archaeological sites extend along a long desert valley. Nabataean tombs at Hegra are the best-known remains, but older kingdoms, rock inscriptions and mud-brick settlements show that the valley supported successive communities and trade routes over several millennia.
Archaeological sites are spread across a broad desert landscape rather than concentrated in one walkable complex. Guided visits explain the tombs and ancient trade routes, while viewpoints, sandstone formations and the oasis show why communities settled here. Visitor facilities are expanding quickly, but the strongest impression remains the scale of human history within an austere valley.
