OVERVIEW
The Altai Mountains form a vast highland region where Russia, Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan meet. Snow-covered peaks, glaciers, clear rivers, dry grasslands and forested valleys create major changes in landscape over relatively short distances. Small settlements and seasonal herding remain important, while archaeological remains and rock art show that the region has linked cultures across Central Asia for thousands of years.
Conditions vary greatly between countries, valleys and access routes. Some areas support road trips, rafting and comfortable lodges, while others require long off-road journeys, trekking or horse travel. Choosing one clearly defined section is more practical than treating the entire mountain system as a single journey, especially where borders and permits limit movement.
