OVERVIEW
Alexandria stretches along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, where dense neighbourhoods, beaches and a sweeping seafront road face the sea. Founded by Alexander the Great, it later became one of the ancient world’s leading centres of trade and scholarship. Much of that city lies beneath the modern streets or underwater, but archaeological sites, catacombs, museums and a major modern library preserve important parts of its story.
The seafront offers the clearest route through the city, linking fishing harbours, cafés, historic buildings and crowded residential districts over many kilometres. Seafood and café culture remain central to daily life, while surviving European-era architecture adds another historical layer. Busy, worn streets sit beside powerful reminders of the ancient Mediterranean port.
