OVERVIEW
Ålesund is a port town on Norway’s west coast, spread across several islands where mountains meet the sea. After a major fire in 1904, much of the centre was rebuilt in a decorative Art Nouveau style, creating a rare concentration of towers, curved façades and colourful ornament. Fishing, shipbuilding and offshore industries remain active, while a nearby hill gives a clear view over the town’s islands and surrounding peaks.
Canals, harbour activity and Art Nouveau architecture provide interest at street level, and the centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Boat trips and road journeys lead to fjords, seabird islands and mountain scenery, but the rebuilt town is more than a gateway. Seafood culture and the close relationship with a working harbour give it a strong identity of its own.

Taste local seafood in Ålesund
