Aleppo

Aleppo is an ancient city in northern Syria whose historic centre developed around a massive hilltop citadel. Mosques, caravan inns, churches, bathhouses and long covered markets once formed one of the region’s richest urban landscapes. Years of war caused severe destruction, particularly around the old city, although restoration has begun in some areas and important monuments survive.

Any account of the city must recognise both its exceptional heritage and the severe damage suffered by its people and buildings. Traditions of trade, food, music and craft extend well beyond the famous citadel. Tourism remains affected by conflict, political conditions and limited consular support; current government advice should be followed, and the city should not be presented as an ordinary leisure destination.
