OVERVIEW
Alappuzha is a coastal town in southern India and one of the main entry points to Kerala’s backwaters. Canals pass through the urban area and continue into a flat landscape of lagoons, rice fields, villages and palm-lined waterways. Houseboat cruises are the best-known activity, but ferries and smaller boats reveal more of the everyday movement of people, produce and schoolchildren across the region.
The town itself is busy and practical, with markets, temples, churches and a long beach beside the Arabian Sea. Its main value is the transition it provides between urban life and the slower waterways beyond. Overnight houseboats offer comfort and broad views, while public ferries and village stays can provide a closer look at local life. Water levels and seasonal rain shape the landscape throughout the year.
