OVERVIEW
The Åland Islands form a Swedish-speaking archipelago between Finland and Sweden, made up of one main island and thousands of smaller islands and skerries. Low forests, red granite, farmland and sheltered bays create a gentle landscape, while the small capital provides the main concentration of shops, museums and restaurants. Ferries, bridges and short causeways connect many of the inhabited areas.
The islands are well suited to cycling, sailing and unhurried road trips because distances are modest and traffic is light. Maritime museums, old sailing traditions and coastal villages give cultural context beyond the scenery. The main island has the broadest services, while outer islands feel more isolated and depend more heavily on ferry schedules. The archipelago is quiet without being empty or inaccessible.
