OVERVIEW
Al Mukalla is a port city on Yemen’s southern coast, squeezed between the Arabian Sea and bare mountain slopes. Its older waterfront is known for white and pastel buildings, mosques and narrow streets beside an active fishing harbour, while newer districts extend along the coast. The city grew through trade with East Africa, India and the wider Indian Ocean, leaving a distinct maritime identity.
Sea, port and desert mountains meet within a narrow urban strip. Fish markets, wooden boats and seafront streets show the continuing importance of the harbour, while surviving historic houses reflect former merchant wealth. Ongoing conflict and instability make ordinary tourism unsafe, so current official travel advice must take priority over general travel information.
