OVERVIEW
Agra is a city in northern India whose identity is dominated by the Taj Mahal, the white-marble mausoleum built beside the Yamuna River. A vast Mughal fort, formal gardens and additional tombs show that the city was an imperial centre rather than the setting for one monument alone. Dense modern neighbourhoods and busy commercial streets surround the historic sites.
The Taj Mahal is the essential reason to visit, but seeing several Mughal sites gives a fuller understanding of the city’s architecture and imperial history. River viewpoints, craft workshops and old market streets add context beyond the main monument. The contrast between carefully maintained heritage complexes and the crowded modern city can be sharp, so organised timing and transport make the visit easier.

THINGS TO DO
Taste market produce in Agra
Use Agra’s market produce as a starting point for tasting food connected to Agra, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Admire Agra’s landmark architecture
Look closely at Agra’s landmark architecture for a concrete introduction to Agra’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace Agra’s historic quarter
Use Agra’s historic quarter to understand a specific part of Agra’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
